To my fellow blacks and my fellow browns,

I see your angst, I see the tears behind,

I feel your pain when you can’t breathe

I watch your torment and trust me,

If I could do anything, I’d take that away

I want to comfort you; I want to ball my fist with you ...

In 1831, Mary Shelley published an updated version of Frankenstein where she contextualized the novel in her introduction and added long, religiously remorseful passages from Victor. These changes attempt to erase some of the controversy surrounding ideas present in the 1818 edition of the novel. By doing so, the discussion surrounding Frankenstein and its participation in relevant social and cultural discussions was limited...

The American market carried dangerous, toxic, and ineffective cosmetic products in the early 20th century. Cosmetics were widely unregulated, even though legislation regulated food and drugs. As a response to raise awareness about the issue, authority figures from the Food and Drug Administration created a traveling exhibit known as the American Chamber of Horrors in 1933. The exhibit highlighted about 100 dangerous products which the FDA lacked authority to regulate...

Multitudes of elements, ranging from language to food to religions and moremake up diverse cultures around the world. When discussing American culture, productivity is a trait that comes to mind. The chosen fuel to make sure this productivity keeps happening is caffeine. Caffeine is a chemical compound that has an extensive history and is identified as a stimulant by many drug organizations. It was identified in 1819 but it has been consumed as teas and coffee long before then. Around the 1980s is when...

The Siege of Constantinople, and the fall of the Byzantine Empire in 1453 CE, was the culmination of the collapse of the 1,500-year-old Roman Empire that had engulfed and dominated the ancient world. At the fall of the last political remnants of the Eastern Roman Empire at Constantinople, there lay the beneficiaries of the imperial Roman inheritance: the Ottoman Empire under the leadership of Sultan Mehmet II...

Epigenetics can be defined as chemical modifications of DNA that affect gene expression without altering nucleotide sequence. These modifications are considered stable and can be passed onto descendent cells and progeny. The three main epigenetic modifications are DNA methylation, post-translational chromatin modifications, and the actions of noncoding RNAs...

To determine the effects of reimagining culturally relevant stories to fit the sensibilities of modern audiences, this research investigates gender dynamics and the societal value placed on individual heroism by comparing characterizations in Homer’s Iliad with two contemporary retellings. Sociologists Lilah Canavero and Gayle Rubin outline Homeric Greece’s gendered constructions while Dean Hammer’s studies on Aegean warrior culture describe the effects of societal expectation on epic characters. Building upon these works...

Critics disagree about the source, severity, and significance of Lear’s madness. Some critics, like Shweta Bali, argue that “Lear’s mind begins to fail with age” (89), whereas Jerome Mazzaro claims that Lear’s insanity is a consequence of accumulating emotional “shocks” (108) from filial ingratitude. Danielle Hilaire interrogates Lear’s madness by investigating what seems to cure it...

Parents of young children are some of the most fearful humans that walk this Earth, and rightfully so. When a child falls ill, parents enlist doctor’s help to heal their young ones; however, in the 1600’s, medicine only went so far. When Elizabeth Parris and Abigail Williams, perfectly happy, normal children, were inflicted with uncontrollable spasms and manic episodes, the doctor found nothing physically wrong with these girls...

Vitamin B-9 is commonly referred to as folate or folic acid. Folate is a water-soluble vitamin so most of it is used or excreted through urine, with little storage in the body (Davidson, 2020). This makes it important to consume a healthy amount of folate in natural foods, which is typically not challenging. Folic acid supplements are also a common way to reach the recommended folate levels, especially during pregnancy...

There are many studies on writing, palliative care, and healing. In his article “Poetry and Healing at the End of Life,” Dr. Patrick Clary discusses the role of writing based on the five tasks of relationship completion by providing examples from patients and personal experiences with his father (798). These five tasks promote smooth communication and closing at terminal scenarios, and they consist of “I love you, I forgive you, please forgive me, thank you, and goodbye” (Clary 798).  Since reflective writing and reading can encourage emotional healing even years after a loss...
